Most of us are smart enough not to surround ourselves with people who will agree with us all the time. It doesn’t take long in a business to realize that always getting your way may take you down a rosy path ending in thorns.
That said, all of us tend to like people who think like us, and this is doubly true when people make decisions the same way we do.
Though there are 16 different Myers-Briggs personality types, there are only 4 different decision-making mental processes we use to evaluate information. That means you can hire people of a different personality type from you, and STILL be hiring people who tend to evaluate information and decisions the same way you do.
This will be totally unconscious. You may realize you’re not the same type, but still really like the ‘cut of their jib’. “They just really seem to have their head together” can easily be code for “they see the world the same way I do, and that means having their head together.”
The best teams have a cross section of evaluation systems, which means – the best teams have each of the decision-making processes represented.
Here are the four different decision-making processes:
Effectiveness
Harmony
Accuracy
Authenticity
Which one are you, and have you designed your team to ensure there is variety?
If you know what your decision-making style is and know (or suspect) the decision-making style(s) of your team, shoot me an email if you’d like more insight on how these styles interact. What are some of the advantages and/or disadvantages when these styles work together? I’ll answer your email and make the question and answer available here on the blog for everyone’s benefit.
Cheers!
