Why can someone seem highly skilled and precise in one part of life, but surprisingly careless in another? Joel + Antonia explore how personality functions develop through experience, why our strongest traits can sometimes make us more cavalier, and why type stereotypes often miss the full picture. They also break down a listener’s question about her ISTJ husband to show how responsibility, context, and personal priorities can shape how personality traits actually show up day to day.

Thanks for another great episode! I have ENFJ preferences. For me the growth is more from unconscious to conscious. Earlier in my life journey, I had zero awareness of what I what I was doing. My harmony driver meant that I, unconscoiusly and compulsively strived for deep connection, emotional harmony and deep and meaningfulls ALL the time. I wasn’t conscious of doing this. It was just reality. As Joel said, fish in water stuff. Looking back I sometime behaved in incredibly insensitive ways. I’d meet someone or perhaps catchup with someone I knew and in the first sentence would try to connect to their deepest thing..which was often painful or a field of suffering. So, I’d say something like..‘so, how are you feeling about how you hate your father’ or whatever the topic was. I thought i was being soulful and trying to help people ‘spiritually’ (yep, there are other layers to this!). Now, I cringe and can see why I got the sense sometimes that people wanted to steer clear of me. My behaviour definitely could have been assessed as incompetent (which it was) and even the operation of an inferior function. For me the journey has been about becoming more and more awake and conscious of what drives me (a forever task). One of the results has been that now I am silent alot more. I am more aware of what I am sensing. When I feel the emotional pain in another person, I don’t immediately assume it is my job to relieve it. Sometimes I say nothing and walk away. Sometimes I ask a careful, more sensitive question…and then other times my conscious awareness goes off line for a moment and I still come on too strong and say stuff that makes people feel uncomfortable…L plate on for life!
