In this episode, Joel and Antonia become advocates for the cognitive function of Extraverted Thinking (“Effectiveness”) and talk about why we need it in our world.
In this podcast you’ll find:
- Extraverted Thinking “Effectiveness”
- Driver for ENTJs and ESTJs
- Copilot for INTJs and ISTJs
- The welfare system is an excellent example of a system built by Extraverted Thinking.
- When Effectiveness is done well, you don’t recognize it until it quits working.
- We lean into these systems, and they facilitate our experience.
- Walt Disney World Magic Kingdom is a two-story structure.
- The first level is utilidors – an underground tunnel system where all the staff can access the park with ease.
- The systems Extraverted Thinking creates can help people survive (welfare system), and it can be used to create a magical experience for people (Disney)
- You don’t have to worry about anything in Disney
- Designing Disney’s Theme Parks: The Architecture of Reassurance
- When done well, Effectiveness reassures you that you are safe in the system.
- When you get on a plane, you feel reassured you are going to land safely.
- Engineering is applied thinking in the external world and is usually the foray of TJs.
- If you want to see how efficient and reliable Extraverted Thinking is, go to a country where it isn’t the rule. Everything is incredibly inconvenient, and you have to fight for everything.
- “Any sufficiently developed technology is indistinguishable from magic.”
- It is an easy sell to discuss why the world needs Extraverted Thinking on a systemic level.
- On the individual level, it’s a little harder to sell.
- People’s biggest complaint about Effectiveness is that it plows over the individual and appears manipulative.
- “The only right anyone has in a relationship is the right to leave. Otherwise, everything is negotiable.” –INTJ
- Effectiveness plays in the realm of power more than any other function
- To Extraverted Thinking, info is actionable and useable.
- Info is power to TJs.
- Power has a negative connotation in our world now.
- People usually demonize power when they don’t understand it or can’t get it.
- Power is organizing energy for an outcome.
- We need people who understand the game of power.
- Power is a thankless job, which is why it tends to come with a lot of perks.
- People are always upset with anyone in power.
- Effectiveness is reassuring to people. It builds the things we take for granted.
- Developing an appreciation for Extraverted Thinking requires a simultaneous appreciation of leadership and power.
- Acceptable spillage vs cost
- Harmony asks, What is acceptable discord?
- Effectiveness asks, What is an acceptable loss?
- There are a disproportionately high number of TJs in positions of gov’t and C-level execs.
- This world needs Extraverted Thinking.
- If you’re getting the message that the world doesn’t like power and leadership, don’t listen to it.
- Can we do power and leadership better?
- Who we are is valuable but also what we are: What have we built in our lives? What work have we done?
- Profiler Training card deck
- Effectiveness = amelioration: to be continually improving. Always getting better. Removing inefficiencies.

I have worked with extraverted thinking people and in my opinion they do not look far enough ahead to be politicians if you give them a job to do they are the best. They also do not like choices where it is a debate. I also think they need to be told what to do for them to function at there best like you said engineers bit confused by this extraverted thinking or the podcast.

Considering I live in the Philippines, and EFPish attitudes seem to reign supreme, I’m happy to comment on this. I also feel I have to learn how to work and understand Te users more as a Ti user, considering I want to treat others as fairly as possible. I have to admit, I make the exception for Te users close to me, but I’m making the effort for even those I don’t know well. Even my lower Fe does not like it sometimes. So to work with this, I’ll share this to all of you. I’m sure there’s enough articles out there that can emphasize the good things about living here, especially a lot less of any discrimination, talent in the arts and warmth, considering Filipinos tend to value optimism, but as a Ti user, I think it’s essential to become aware of the bad things too.
Lack of Te in the Philippines :
1. Discipline in everyday life is lacking and you’ll probably see more people breaking minor traffic rules, skipping over lines, cleaning poop from pets and peeing on the wall of something, hence all the signs in the Philippines to emphasize this.
2. Watching American politics, I recognize how much more online resources there is about the data around elections, the Philippines has some data, but have a lot less compared to Americans. Election seems more dependent on which candidate can express as much pity or possibly anger as possible for the disadvantaged, than talking about the solutions they have around solving it. You rarely see actual discussions online or even in real life talking about political issues in a logical way. It’s all inspirational speeches or something. Enough about what to do, and ask how are you going to do it???
3. There are barely any well known innovators and scientists in the Philippines. Those who are are the exception, and not the rule. (See the website GoodNewsPilipinas). So many of our more technical issues in society, such as poverty or even environmental issues could be solved if we had more innovative tendencies. That is, a willingness to take both scientific and entrepreneurial risks. Filipinos often agree too much with each other, and this attitude just tends to prevent any type of innovation.
4. If anything, the blog GetRealPhilippines is right about how “Pinoy Pride” gets too far sometimes. Considering the blog seems to be full of Te users as writers, I admit critics are often right when they say their articles are often said in very harsh ways with lack of Fi when it could be said more gently, but in regards to a lot of lack of Te emphasis here, they’re still right. Pinoy Pride becomes a type of pride that prevents any constructive criticism to create actual results to be made, and a type of optimism that prevents being able to improve the country happens.
5. The TV show influence here is so overemotional, and I don’t mean that in a way that expressing genuine hurt is bad, but I mean they often encourage unhealthy ways of emotional expression. There are exceptions, but generally there is an emphasis on as much drama as possible, a lot of crying and overused cliches in Filipino television. There’s also a love for catfighting, that is screaming and shouting in arguments rather than encouraging calm and healthy expression. There’s also the perpetration of romanticizing really abusive relationships in Filipino books, as well as TV. You can see this with Filipino writers in wattpad, with the emphasis on bad boys, abusive rich men, and cheating in relationships. I’d love to see actual dramas made that actually, I don’t know, encourage you to think about things, for once. I don’t know, at least a drama where people process things calmly, rationally and efficiently, and not demonize Te to make about every villain in Filipino media to be an unhealthy Te user greedy for power or something. Often small indie film productions are the exception for this, but the powerful ones in media often make really repetitive films to get as much money as possible.
I’m a fairly young INTJ woman (22), and I just graduated with a degree in environmental sustainability and social anthropology. ? couldn’t have a better fit for an intj. But I’m having trouble now figuring out how to start a career where I can actually use Extraverted Thinking. I desperately want to build structures and systems, particularly in terms of dealing with climate change, it needs this function badly, but it just doesnt seem like those jobs exist or have no way of entering them. And I can’t take the next 20 years to build a career and work my way up to a position with the authority to create systems, because we physically do not have that much time left to become sustainable. Any advice for this panicked and extremely despondent intj?
As an INTP engineer, I have a close working relationship with (I believe) an INTJ. When we work together, we can make anything happen. But I absolutely need his Te to keep me focused on the actual goal rather than whether my design in perfect
The only time I really have trouble valuing Te is when it’s directed towards me as expectations. I can affirm that at least this IxTP can relate to everything Antonia said about commitments. (If you’re familiar with the Clifton Strengths, my dependability and responsibility are pretty much at the bottom.) What I really need to do is identify all the Te users in my circle and only agree to a request if I can team up with one of them. They just have an amazing ability to make things work.
How do I know if I have power? How do I know if I truly hate money because of where it comes from or what it destroys. When those two things were mentioned it threw me off my path of trying to find how powerful I really am for myself and those things in my life. By the way the Disney mentioning was amazing. I had no idea. That’s so interesting how they run that place.
