Are you wasting your time on the “Pygmalion Project” to try to get to an ideal relationship?

In Greek mythology, Pygmalion was a sculptor who – losing interest in ‘real women’ – carved his ideal woman out of ivory.

We are often attracted to people very different from ourselves. That makes sense – polarity creates attraction. But once we begin building a life with that person, we find ourselves starting the “Pygmalion Project” – we become frustrated by the ‘reality’ of these difference, and try to chip away at these supposed imperfections to turn them into our ideal relationship, ignoring that those very differences were what once attracted us in the first place!

Understanding our mates and children on a profound level helps us decipher the difference between personality preferences (which are MOST of our differences) versus a behavior intended to frustrate us (which is almost NEVER).

My husband and I are making peace on many levels thanks to her advice. What a relief that we finally found something that actually works!”

I’ve only had one boyfriend who was a Sensor, whereas Joel was married to a Sensor for some time. He may have better insight.

That said, I have been observing my parents’ relationship for all of my life and have a few take-aways from it. First, it’s very clear that polarity creates attraction and my ESTP father / INFJ mother are certainly examples of that principle. They’ve always been magnetically attracted to each other even when they wanted to kill each other. Second, there are needs both of them had which neither could fulfill. My father needed a lot more excitement than my mother, and my mother needed a lot more intuitive conversation. They met in the middle by moving a lot and experiencing new things together (almost in an Exploration / ENxP way), but I do think their fights were clear indication of unmet needs.

In order to have a successful S/N relationship both parties have to realize the needs the other can’t fulfill aren’t signs of a lack in them as people, it’s just the cost of specialization. If one person needs more intuition conversation they should have permission to seek it. If the other needs more sensory experiences, excitement or (for an SJ) more safety then they should have permission to seek it. Most of our needs can be found with friendships or activities that don’t threaten the core relationship. Developing a feeling of trust in the relationship and security as individual people are crucial.

So, working on ourselves is almost always the prescription, no matter the diagnosis.

    Thanks for the question!

    Hi Antonia and Joel,

It’s been several months since I’ve discovered your Podcast, and it’s been a very enlightening experience. Thank you!

Somewhere in your past Podcasts, you both mentioned that your parents are Sensing-Intuitive pairs. Are there any significant observations you might have made in such pairs? Or any personal romantic relationships with Sensors?

    Thanks in advance!
