Enneagram Type 7 Explained

Enneagram Type 7 is sometimes called “The Enthusiastic” or “The Epicure.”

This is a head-based type in the Fear Triad.

Each of the three types in the fear or head-based triad is going to be structured or shaped by their relationship to childhood fear in some way.

Enneagram 7 Types are fear types that usually don’t really relate much to fear at all.

They tend not to feel sort of a “global fear,” but might feel a fear of being trapped in something unpleasant. Or they might fear feeling anxious or uncomfortable.

An Enneagram 7 is someone who’s really a fun, loving type. This is a type who’s really visionary and imaginative, someone who’s very spontaneous, future oriented, and a little hedonistic.

Enneagram 7 Types focus a lot on the future because it’s another strategy for escaping unpleasant emotions in the moment. Type 7’s are very optimistic and automatically reframe negatives into positives. They are always really looking at the positive data first and sometimes it’s the only data they can see. This type likes to move away from pain and toward pleasure.

Many Enneagram 7 Types relate to a lot of the type traits, but they’ll say, “I don’t really move away from pain toward pleasure.” The moving away from discomfort can be unconscious for a seven.

Enneagram Type 7Basic Strategy of Type 7

The basic strategy of Enneagram Type Seven is to seek pleasure and stimulation.

This can be having something really good to eat or having a positive experience. Another way this may show up is reading something interesting or thinking about interesting ideas or brainstorming fun ideas.

The Type 7 stimulation, the pleasure, and the fun is a way of avoiding being stuck in uncomfortable or less pleasant emotions. Enneagram 7 Types avoid being limited in any way. and don’t like constraints. Sevens like to feel free with a lot of options so they can do whatever they want.

The fear of Enneagram 7 is getting trapped in something painful. They fear that by feeling an uncomfortable feeling, they will be forced to feel it forever.

Key Challenges of The Type

A key challenge for Enneagram 7 Types is learning to consciously deal with difficult emotions and experiences.

When people first learn the Enneagram, many desire to be a seven or I want to hang around with sevens. Enneagram 7’s are very fun and can be very exciting to be around.

However, there is a downside to sevens like there is with all the types. The downside for Enneagram 7 is that sometimes if you’re in relationship with them, it can be hard to deal with what’s not working. It can be hard to have difficult conversations or solve conflict in order to improve the relationship and keep things going really well.
